How to Fuel a Standstill: Reignite Your Motivation as a Leader
Ask yourself: Where do I get my motivation?
The answer is often a mixed bag.
Often we are motivated by our own capabilities. We set goals and set out to conquer them. Doing so makes us feel accomplished. Successful. Capable. We set more goals and we keep building.
This phenomenon isn’t bad. But what happens when you fail? What happens when you actually don’t have the answers, or someone challenges you in a way that you don’t expect?
If your cycle of goal-setting halts to a grinding stop whenever you don’t have the answer, then something is off.
The truth is, you should be motivated by your capabilities, but only when you acknowledge that you’re only capable insofar as God equips you.
Only when you’re relying on God to form you, equip you and give you the right resources can you be grounded in humility.
And when you’re grounded in humility, small failures don’t shake you.
Seek out the wisdom of others
Sacred Scripture is abundantly clear that wisdom is a prize worthy of pursuit.
In Proverbs, wisdom is a personified woman.
“Let your heart hold fast my words;
keep my commandments, and live.
Get wisdom; get insight: do not forget, nor turn away
from the words of my mouth.
Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;
love her, and she will guard you.” - Proverbs 4:4-6
Seek wisdom in prayer, Scripture study, and in valued mentors and friends. Surround yourself with individuals who inspire and motivate you. Not a blindly supportive crowd, but a truly wise, experienced, and prayerful collection of friends who can counsel you in your business and in your outlook.
Prayerfully seek out mentors who have achieved what you aspire to accomplish, not just professionally, but personally. Be honest and vulnerable about your situation. Their guidance and wisdom will provide valuable insights that help you navigate the roadblocks that are draining you.
Learning from others who have pursued their holy ambitions can give you the practical tips you need to get back on track and reignite your own passion.
“Faithful friends are life-saving medicine; and those who fear the Lord will find them.” Sirach 6:16 .
Kill your inner perfectionist
“A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week” — George Patton.
While it’s ideal to aim for excellence in everything, you often need to be content with simply the ‘good’ in order to even get to a point where you are approaching excellence.
You’ve heard it before, but don’t let perfection be the enemy of the good.
Part of killing your inner perfectionist is also celebrating your successes, no matter how small and how much further you need to go. Let failures refine your ambitions rather than diminish them, and let your wins encourage you that God will equip you for His will.
