Living in dependence

Modern culture worships independence.

But independence from what?

Independence Day is a good time to reflect on the role of patriotism in our lives. But it also can prompt us to look at how modern culture emphasizes independence to an extreme, especially when it comes to business culture.

In business, independence from moral absolutes can turn into ethical problems. Another way the obsession with independence impacts business culture is through the push to be completely self-sufficient.

You’ve experienced this view of independence.

But is this true freedom?

Modern business culture often equates happiness with becoming the go-it-alone, high-achieving self-starter. It snubs the humble man or woman who builds for a purpose higher than the self and relies on God and other people in the process.

But if you follow the course of action carved out by a culture obsessed with self-reliance and unbridled autonomy, you might find yourself…

  • Wary of reaching out to others because you default to an “I can just do it myself” mentality

  • Disconnected from your faith because you are unsure of how to depend on God

  • Living in a constant state of crisis management and alienation

  • Suffering from a lack of moral guidance and risking faltering in your values

But what modern business culture misses is that dependence on the right people is the key to transforming your work, your team, and your venture.

Imagine a business culture grounded in understanding and respect for the human person. Where best practices are aligned with individual needs and ultimately work for the common good, both within the company and in society.

Sound too good to be true?

It’s not.

This weekend, reevaluate just how much you are impacted by modern culture’s emphasis on self-sufficiency. Envision the alternative for you and your venture.

Consider asking God for the grace to embrace dependence, first on Him, then on the right people.

Pray for values-aligned partners, humble friends, and driven growers to grow alongside

How will you grow to depend on God and on the right people this season?

Imagine a business culture grounded in understanding and respect for the human person. Where best practices are aligned with individual needs and ultimately work for the common good, both within the company and in society.
